Bring House of the Dragon to phones. The game is set during the Targaryen civil war, 172 years before Daenerys, and players are new dragonriders fighting their way toward King’s Landing. The art had to feel true to HBO’s world, stay readable on a small screen across a huge strategy map, and support years of live-service content.

The challenge
My role
I set the game’s visual direction and quality bar, then built and led the art team from first concept through soft launch. I worked daily with engineering, design, product, and production so the art served 4X gameplay, fit the technology and schedule, and still looked like Westeros.
What I did
- Set the vision. I defined the look of the world, its characters, and its dragons. That covers 28 dragons at launch, including the show’s Caraxes, Syrax, Vhagar, Sunfyre, and Seasmoke plus original designs, in four breeds with distinct silhouettes, growing from egg to adult. It also covers a world map running from snowy northern mountains to southern deserts, with landmarks like the Red Keep, Dragonstone, and Harrenhal.Add: style guide pages, dragon silhouette sheets, biome key art
- Built the team. I hired and led a distributed team of 20+ artists and gave direction, reviews, and actionable feedback across concept, 3D, UI, and VFX.Add: before-and-after paintovers
- Protected authenticity. I negotiated access to HBO’s House of the Dragon VFX assets, so the team could adapt the show’s own dragon models for real-time mobile.Add: show model next to the in-game dragon, if you’re allowed to share it
- Directed outside partners. I kept external vendors consistent with the internal quality bar.
- Explored new workflows. I set up a GenAI sandbox to test emerging tools, teach stakeholders about them, and find practical uses in production.
- Took it to market. I led art through the soft launch and helped move the title and its art production over to the live-service team.
Results
As of October 2026
- Rated 4.8 stars from about 17,000 ratings on the App Store and 4.5 stars from about 40,000 reviews on Google Play, with 1M+ downloads on Google Play.
- ScreenRant said the game “has taken dragon creation and lore to the next level,” calling it “worth checking out if not just to see these distinct and incredible designs alone” (ScreenRant).
- Still live, with new campaigns every eight weeks or so and plans to expand into the wider Game of Thrones world (PocketGamer.biz).
